Pioneer 10 Farewell
posted @ 08:09:00 MST by bryn
Made in USA, baby.
It looks like Pioneer 10 has fallen silent. Take a minute to think about the fact that lil' ol' us built something that left our Solar System. They don't make them like that anymore. Personally I think we ought to be launching one of these every year just to see what's out there. It's been almost 31 years since Pioneer 10 left here, that's almost as long as I've been alive. It was still sending real data back to Earth as recently as last year. Amazing. And I can't seem to find a CPU fan that will last more than 2 years... hmm.
Here is a story from CNN about it. |

Slackware PostgreSQL Scripts
posted @ 06:44:00 MST by bryn
I hacked together two scripts for starting PostgreSQL and setting up the environment variables for users' profiles. While I put these together for a Slackware 8.1 box of mine they could surely be used on other systems. I looked at a lot of sample scripts and just wanted something that didn't have external dependencies like many init scripts I've seen and was lean, clean, and simple like Slackware itself. These scripts assume the default PostgreSQL installation settings such as the path of /usr/local/pgsql.
The rc.pgsql script for start/restart/stop is here.
And here is the pgsql.sh script for putting into /etc/profile.d which will cause it to be executed when a user logs in using a Bourne-compatible shell. |

Business Week: The Linux Uprising
posted @ 09:14:00 MST by bryn
There's an impressively well-researched article on Business Week Online about the effect of Linux in the computing marketplace. I've seen a lot of self-serving, propagandist drivel when it comes to this kind of thing before but this article is a fairly level-headed take on the little penguin that could.
The link itself:

Be sure to check out the link to the cover image - I got a good chuckle out of it:

Monkeys
posted @ 07:20:00 MST by bryn
I think monkeys are just inherently funny. If you think of any activity and then imagine a monkey doing it instead of a person it suddenly becomes funny. At least I think so, but I'm a complete loon.
