Being in an exceptionally dorky mood tonight I decided to take a screenshot of my desktop and post it. No, I guess I wasn't enough of a geek yet so I'll keep trying.
Bryn's Desktop

| Transgaming: Half-Assing it at it's Best |
| posted @ 15:38:00 MDT by bryn |
This article on linuxgames.com reminded me of why I only briefly tried Transgaming's WineX. I felt compelled to comment but wanted to steer clear of the idiotic Gentoo flamewar that ensued. So here goes the local copy:
An interesting quandary. I've always found the existence of the WineX CVS tree to be more of a PR move than anything else. Of course, this is just my opinion after having tried to follow and build it several times. I was an early adopter of WineX and actually paid for it for a short while. I gave up as more and more games I wanted to play didn't receive support. The "voting" system seemed to be a novel idea at first but there was a huge problem with it: A lot of the votes were going to games that already HAD Linux support such as Quake 3. This could have been controlled and I don't believe a game that has Linux support should have been allowed to be in the voting.
The fact that WineX did this seriously undermined the platform on which they're trying to build their business. Instead of the onus being placed on the mod developers to use the cross-platform bytecode built into Quake 3 for mod development WineX shoots it's own platform in the foot. I purchased WineX in the first place to be able to sever one of only two ties to Windows that I had... games. By not providing for a well rounded base of games (again, ONLY available on Windows) WineX created a very unappealing product for an important market - new customers.
Pleasing your paying customers is understandably a staple of basic business 101. However, by letting themselves be completely governed by a few screaming turncoats they lost the respect of intelligent consumers in search of true market alternatives. In short, they're a Linux and Open Source company who soured the meaning of Linux and Open Source.
They have an opportunity to get back on track I believe. I hope they take the time to review their original mission and the building blocks that got them here. I think that if they were not to impede the "spreading of the word" when it comes to alternatives they might start tapping into the vast market of us that want to see them succeed in giving us a real choice.
With that I bid you adieu as I walk out past my dedicated Windows gaming box which sits powered off almost like a console system unless I'm gaming. Sad, ain't it? |

Every once in a while something really neat-o pops up that I just have to slap up here. Such a thing came from lurking in the deep today...

Nanotechnology has all the buzz right now but I've always found Biomimetics a whole hell of a lot cooler. Nature still builds better mousetraps too, incidentally.
Yes, I know, I'm working on it but I'm getting better... really. =) |

Yes, there is DEFINITELY supposed to be an extra "M" in that.
I always take a cab when I know I'm even going to have ONE drink. Figuring it's supposed to be the responsible thing to do, I just toss out the trust and let it (me) ride...
Tonight, I think I was driven home by a cab driver who was drunker than I could hope to get on any Friday night. He even shied away from an intersection where we happened upon a police car. The guy almost put the brake pedal through the floor when he saw the Police Cruiser... and the light was green.
Had I been incoherent, I would have thought I rode a vibrator home - this based upon how many times we rode the center-line nipples all the way to my house. All I could do was be happy for each moment that I was still alive. =)
You think I'm kidding... heh.
Oh yes, we also had a bona fide winner for Quote of the Night... "Wow, you're really pretty but you're kind of ugly." Actually said by a guy at the bar to a girl... no shit. |

I used to wonder why people didn't place as much trust in Internet publications as they do in printed word. When you have idiots like this passing themselves off as technology writers you start to see a pattern...
